China’s most famous tech company, Huawei, recently unveiled the Huawei Mate60 Pro, its most technologically advanced cell phone yet. This phone has received considerable attention around the world because it uses a Chinese-made chip manufactured at a technology level much more advanced than expected for China’s electronics industry. This development indicates China has made significant strides in chip manufacturing. The technology embargoes the U.S. and other countries have imposed on China may not have had the desired effect.
Research firm Tech Insights analyzed the Mate 60’s main processor chip and concluded that it was made using EUV, or extreme ultraviolet lithography, which was developed by Dutch company ASML and is highly secretive proprietary technology. Currently, China is largely unable to buy equipment incorporating EUV technology under US-led trade restrictions. As a result, industry and security analysts in the U.S. and other countries have become skeptical about the effectiveness of sanctions and concerned about how China has apparently mastered this advanced technology as China seeks to produce technology domestically and diversify and expand technology partnerships.
