Spectral Splendor: Keegan Conjures Magic in “The Woman in Black”

October 14, 2024

Spine-Tingling “Woman in Black” Dazzles at Keegan Theatre

Back by popular demand, The Keegan Theatre is staging a riveting new production of The Woman in Black. The play, adapted from Susan Hill’s gothic novel, recounts the eerie encounters of Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer troubled by his experience with a malicious ghost at the isolated Eel Marsh House. Years later, driven by the need to confront his lingering fears, Kipps recruits an actor to help him recreate and relive his haunting ordeal. As they explore the depths of Kipps’ memories, the boundaries between the tangible and the supernatural begin to dissolve, pulling the audience into a realm where the past and present collide. Through a masterful blend of atmospheric storytelling, mounting suspense, and psychological unease, this gripping play delivers a terrifying exploration of the power of guilt, grief, and the persistence of trauma, leaving spectators questioning the nature of their own perceptions and beliefs.

A Timeless Tale and Creative Collaboration

Josh Sticklin, the Director and Scenic Designer of the Keegan’s production, describes The Woman in Black as a timeless tale particularly suited to the stage. Sticklin says, “As the nights lengthen and the world seems just a little darker, there’s something primal about gathering to share ghost stories, a tradition rooted in the Victorian era and one that still captivates us today. The Woman in Black invites us to explore that peculiar thrill of fear, those heart-stopping jolts that, oddly enough, remind us we are alive. Our production blends traditional storytelling with theatrical magic, cinematic intensity, and maybe, just maybe, something truly supernatural lurking in the shadows.”

The production showcases creative collaboration among Sticklin, the cast, and crew as the team brings this ghostly story to life. The production makes ample use of the Keegan’s impressive rotating stage to smooth scene transitions, transporting the audience from the comfort of a theater to the misty marshes of England. Strategic placement and manipulation of creative set pieces enhance the immersive experience. The two lead actors demonstrate remarkable chemistry and versatility, effortlessly shifting between characters and time periods to portray flashbacks and scenes within scenes. Their convincing performances draw the audience deeper into the unfolding mystery.

Synergy on Stage: Two Actors, A Singular Performance

Two talented actors co-star in the play. Robert Leembruggen, a veteran actor with 30 years of experience in more than 70 theatrical productions, both on stage and behind the scenes, deftly and with innate gravitas plays an assortment of characters throughout the production. And Noah Mutterperl, an accomplished actor in his Keegan Theatre debut, plays the role of Kipps, the tormented lawyer who’s coping with the haunted recollections of his time at Eel Marsh House. Together, the two actors captivate the audience with their powerful presence and undeniable chemistry. Leembruggen and Mutterperrl draw the audience into their world with impeccable timing and intuitive responses as they move in harmony across the stage and through their interwoven dialog duet. Their dovetailing performances complement each other expertly. Watching them is pure delight.

Spotlight on Suspense: Lighting as a Narrative Character

Sage Green’s masterful lighting design artfully crafts the play’s eerie ambiance, serving as a guide and narrator, seamlessly transitioning the audience between past and present scenes. Through both subtle and dramatic shifts in illumination, the lighting becomes an integral character in itself, manipulating the emotional landscape of the performance. From gentle, calming hues that lull viewers into a false sense of security to sudden, jarring changes that evoke an unsettling creepiness and jump scares, Green’s work underscores the play’s psychological tension and heightens the viewing experience. And with the added element of Brandon Cook’s expertly crafted sound design, the ghostly ambiance reaches new heights, complementing Green’s evocative lighting to create an immersive and unnervingly realistic supernatural atmosphere that sends shivers down the spine of every audience member.
